This is the mental image I got from the microsoft article discussing why 32 Bit windoz could not use the full 4 Gig of Main Memory. Reminds me of when BIOS and other slow memory items were shadowed to ram (years ago and win 3.11)..

this "address area" is set aside (reserved) to address I/O
memory i.e. 512 meg video ram address' instead of the
uppermost .88 Gig block of Main Memory

The address' cannot cover the mapped in i/o memory
and the main memory at thesame time
