An AMD64-only processor could be designed and it would
be simpler than the existing K8. But it would no longer be
an x86 compatible processor. If you don't think that is
an all-important issue for AMD then you are dellusional.


Maybe AMD would be willing to jettison the 1% of software that requires full legacy x86 functionality, and be willing to run only the most modern 99% that actually executes in the compatibility sub-mode of long-mode.

They'd just have to accept the fact that Intel would be the only choice available to run that old 1%.

I'm pretty sure that's what everybody here is trying over and over again to tell you.
