Nocona will not be going up against the Opteron we see from HP or IBM today. It will be quite a different beast. Interesting times ahead!

I took it for the simple meaning. Opteron will improve over the next six months. It will have faster speeds and a new rev of the core on 130nm. Maybe some obvious improvements like cache. Will it be on socket 939, or is that just for Athlon?

Nocona is basically Prescott, and I don't see any rabbits that Intel can pull out of their hat to make it competitive. Their 90nm process is screwed (but it might make some dandy flash).
