General Motors Corp. (GM) Wednesday reported a third-quarter net loss of $39 billion, or $68.85 a share, compared with a loss of $147 million, or 26 cents a share, in the same period a year ago, as the company booked a $38.6 billion, non-cash charge as it reduces certain net deferred tax assets to comply with federal accounting rules. The Detroit auto maker said automotive revenue equaled $43.1 billion during the period, up from $39.6 billion a year ago. Besides the non-cash charge, GM recorded a $3.5 billion after-tax gain on the sale Allison Transmission and recorded other special charges of $1.6 billion in pension service costs, $400 million in for restructuring actions and $400 million related to a reserve adjustment for supplier and former unit Delphi Corp.
