K-12 teachers grade homework at night and deal with unruly students and demanding families as well as incompetent administrators.

University professors in the sciences generally spend more years getting their Ph.D and doing postdoctoral work than a doctor spends getting an M.D. and doing residency. Then the average professor starts at ~1/3 the salary and works 80 hours a week on research, teaching and grant writing.

And the average university professor in the sciences is much smarter than the average doctor. Doctors are good at memorizing. Try to memorize your way to a Ph.D in physics ...
