Bruce, what's the main purpose of having a powerful power supply, like 500 watts?

Is it so you can run lots of hardware or supply the processor with a lot of power?

Also, are the motherboadrs good at stabilizing current?

I'm asking because I'm thinking of building a 24-bit DAC, and I want an outboard power suppy.

Any suggestions?
