Excel...I do not have kids. Even if I did this would not change things too much. I believe if children are raised with the proper gun safety and gun education (respect) they would not be overly curious about them because they were 'taboo' and therefore knew nothing of them. IMO this would bring about the proper respect for firearms as well as remove the dangers of an accident happening because they did not know how to properly handle a firearm.
I have a gun at my disposal in two positions in the house that only my wife & I know about and they are both in our plain and almost constant sight, the third is in my office. A person that I could not trust around me with a gun Would Not be in my home much less be in my life. I will admit it here and now, I am very prejudice person, I Do Not Care Too Much For Stupid People! Therefore I try to avoid them as much as possible. This may not be right in some people's opinion but it is my choice and my right!
Every other week we have the kids ( my stepsons ) & our grandchildren over for dinner only because of the parents request as well as the fact that the grandkids are still very young do we remove all but one (my main carry) gun from the house to the garage. Immediately after they leave the guns are returned to their usual stations of readiness.
In the past many a child grew up in a household where firearms were readily available and yet there were no accidents in the news like we see now. Once again, IMO it's the ignorance of firearms that is at fault for most of these accidents as well as the reckless gun habits of their moron parents that leads to these kind of accidents. Curiosity Kills!!!
As far as the small gun safes go I was looking into one for my Dad & stepmother, they have a 4 year old in the house. The one you described sounds like the one I was looking at. It had a digit pad that lit up as soon as you touched it and it popped open to give instant access to one or two guns and had room for maybe a knife and wallet. Because it locked onto a steel plate you could get and mount a extra plate in your car or whatever you liked. I think the one I was looking into was a Moseberg and was right around two hundred dollars. I like this portable gun safe idea for a car and for households with children under 8.
Proper Education Is The Key To Safety!
