As for Iraq... It isn't just the Parliament that will be taking August off while our troops give their lives. So will Bush.
And AP is reporting that al Qaeda is planning to attack American soil using the skills they honed in Iraq. So much for the world being safer without Saddam.
Senate Majority leader Harry Reid is so fed up with Republican filibusters, he's planning to keep the Senate in session all night tonight. The GOP Minority leader has said that he will filibuster each and every bill the Dems put forward to bring the troops home. So Reid is forcing them to stay and debate the issues, and go on record as supporting Bush. The bills are still expected to lose because with the Repubs filibuster tactics, it will require 60 votes to get any bill passed, and so far not enough Repubs are willing to break with Bush.
And guess what has happened just in time for the Senate debates. General Pace has suddenly issued a rosy assessment and prediction about Iraq. John Avarosis at AmericaBlog said, "Now, that's pretty quick work on the part of Pace, considering it was only last week that it became so dangerous in Baghdad that visiting members of Congress could no longer even spend the night at our embassy, and they had to wear Kevlar body armor 24 hours a day (well, 12 hours a day since it wasn't even safe enough to spend the night). Compare that to 3 months ago, or so, when John McCain visited Iraq and was able to visit an Iraqi street market - though only with the protection of 100 US troops and 5 helicopters. One week ago, even THAT wasn't enough to protect visiting members of Congress. But now, one week later, like Lazarus come back from the dead, Iraq is actually safer than it's been in years!"
