There are people from the Religious Right whispering in his ear that God stepped in and gave him the election in 2000 and again 4 years later, and put him in office to save America from evil. And in my opinion, he listens to those people. I believe he sees himself as being on a mission from God from which he must not waver. A reporter once alluded to the fact that Bush Senior didn't want his son to invade Iraq, and the reporter reminded Bush that his father decided not to go into Baghdad in the first Gulf War. When the reporter asked if Bush ever consults his father about the war, Bush responded, "I consult a higher Father." Personally I suspect it's a symptom of untreated alcoholism.
