Keith,

Why would AMD, which is obviously hampered by a lack of capacity in the near future, not ask IBM to manufacture at least their "Paris"/"Palermo" (A64, 256K L2) core for them?

Paris will be 130nm product, so it can't be IBM. Paris will be Newcastle with half cache bad, IMO, and Paris followup will be Winchester with half cache bad. So there is no need to make these specifically.

As far as IBM, Winchester chips (/Palermo) chips could be a good idea. The dies size should be in 100 mm^2, or even below. If it is economically feasible for both sides (IBM and AMD) for IBM to sell them to AMD for $25 or so and for AMD to package and test them, and later sell for some $60-$70. Are these numbers in the right ballpark? How much does packaging and testing cost? My guess is $15 to $20.

Joe
