Ron Paul: GOP's Last Chance?
June 01, 2007 12:00 PM EST
The recent 2008 presidential GOP debates have highlighted one man. His name: Ron Paul. The mainstream media acted surprised and, I’m sure, the other nine candidates were taken aback by this relatively unknown standing out in after-debate polls. It has been reported that Rep. (Dr.) Paul of Texas has a large internet following. But I think it goes beyond the widespread use of the internet.
The NYC Islamic Terrorist attack clash between candidates Giuliani and Paul in front of the nation did not hurt Paul. If anything, Giuliani came across as uneducated about U.S. history and the founding fathers’ warning “against foreign entanglements.” Those who know what Paul stands for understood that he was speaking from an historical-constitutional perspective.
In my disillusionment with the neo-cons taking over the Republican Party, I became aware of this congressional maverick about three years ago while doing some political research. Clicking on his web site, I read the transcripts of his speeches on the floor of the House and came away impressed. He reminds me of England’s Wilberforce who stuck to his convictions against all popular sentiments and England’s pro-slavery stance for over 20 years, succeeding just before his death.
When one candidate, Ron Paul, moves and speaks against the grain of both liberal and neo-conservative politicians, we wonder about this person. Some have called him a crackpot extremist because he doesn’t fit their image of a “progressive” president.
Why I’m impressed by Ron Paul? In one word: Integrity.
Though Paul leans towards the Libertarian philosophy, there is one important principle Paul holds. He always points back to the U.S. Constitution, America’s governing document, in voting on any bill in the House. Adhering to the Constitution, he firmly abides by the Congressional Oath that all Members-Elect take in assuming public office. The fruit is his voting record.
Just a few: He has always said no to: unbalanced budgets; raising taxes (pro eliminating IRS and income taxes); raising congressional pay; giving more power to the executive branch; the Patriot Act (out of which that colossus, Homeland Security, arose). He’s also against a globalist economy and world government; against our nation’s path to the North American Union -- pro legal immigration only.
Over the last 100 years we have become entirely too complacent with the “compromises” of our congressional lawmakers, enacting laws that appear good on the surface but end up more complicated and do much harm in the long term. The result is the abandonment of the U.S. Constitution and our founding principles. We are moving on a fast track, further down the disastrous road to a liberal socialist democracy much like many European countries.
Paul has certainly added excitement to the GOP presidential campaign. He has roused conservatives’ interest in a man who stands above the politically correct and corruptive environment inside the beltway. We see a man in action who observes events not for short-term, political and monied advantage, but analyzes the potential, long-term effects by studying our past history.
No, Ron Paul is not a lawyer. He is a Doctor who has delivered over 4000 babies in his career. But he knows history and he knows the U.S. Constitution. He knows the underlying constitutional, founding principles which should be guiding our nation and her people. He not only knows those principles, he acts upon them.
My dissatisfaction with the Republican Party led me to Ron Paul. Is he just another minor candidate? Unpolished? Too extreme? I believe the 2008 election presents a real challenge to many loyal republicans and democrats, who have seen the two major parties taken over by neo-conservatives and socialist liberals.
Why Paul won’t win -- two flaws for conservative voters: 1) A failure to understand that you can’t pull the baby back into the womb once it has entered the world. Because of Paul’s “pull our military out of all countries including Iraq” stance, he is not facing the reality of the 21st century. We are already there and have been since WWI. The Islamic Terrorist war against all countries is ongoing (1000 years war) and will continue regardless.
2) His failure to recognize there is a large percentage of conservatives who hold to Christian history and believe in God’s provision and influence in the establishment of Western Civilization and the United States. This is why evangelical conservatives discount him.
Is Paul the only candidate who can save the GOP from the neo-cons? Win or lose, the 2006 mid-term election was just a taste of the coming desertion by conservatives to other parties--and not to the Democratic side either. Third parties are waiting in the wings---just for us.
