TiVo signs new licensing pact with Sony
SAN JOSE, Calif., Oct 18 (Reuters) - TiVo Inc. (NasdaqNM:TIVO - news) on Thursday said it has signed a licensing pact with Japan's Sony Corp. (NYSE:SNE - news) that would allow Sony to include TiVo's personal digital recording technology in its consumer electronics products.

TiVo's personal video recording service allows viewers to customize TV viewing by recording shows on a hard drive for playback at a later time. Its technology is already a part of set-top boxes made by Sony as well as Philips Electronics Group . Sony is also a major investor in TiVo.

In recent months, TiVo has said it expects in coming years to see increased benefits from the licensing of its technology and key patents.

Financial details were not released. But on a conference call, Mike Ramsay, TiVo chief executive, said he expects the company to reap revenues from the deal in the range of $10 million to $15 million in the first year and it would receive recurring fees.

``We believe this is an important step toward the proliferation of the TiVo technology and service and will result in exciting products for consumers around the world,'' Ramsay said in a statement.
