this is memory that was developed as high speed alternative when DDR was just starting to become main stream. It is based on a proprietary bus protocol developed by Rambus. The event of DDR2 gives similar and better performance in bandwidth. RDRAM was just available earlier and for a time heavily supported by Intel. Now it's a has-been and not many suppliers manufacture RDRAM anymore (same for the chipset to support it).
