Caterpillar Inc. Says Computers With Employees' Personal Information Stolen


PEORIA, Ill. (AP) -- Construction and mining equipment maker Caterpillar Inc. said on Friday that computer equipment containing personal information on current and former employees has been stolen from a third-party pension benefits plan consultant.
The company said it does not believe the personal data has been accessed or misused yet.

Caterpillar said it is in the process of installing measures to enhance the security of personal company information, and implementing safeguards for the handling of information by vendors.

Shares rose 76 cents to $73.76 on the New York Stock Exchange. Shares rose 24 cents in after-hours trading to $74.
