Blau, re: it might be a mistake to read the higher volume points as having occured later in time than the lower.

I don't think so. Not because of the axis label, which in isolation would allow for your interpretation. But:

(1) The slide is talking about RAMP comparisons. That strongly implies that time also increases as you move from left to right, since any decrease in volume indicates the end of the ramp, so data from that point on is probably not shown.

(2) That's also why you see the data points connected with line segments, into continuous functions. The only reason for connecting a (w1, y1) (w2, y2) pair with a line would be that w1 became w2 over time, so the line implies the yield changed over that time (which may not be strictly true, but no matter). So if the time included data when the volumes were decreasing again, either you would see the lines cross back on themselves (a big mess), or you would have a scatter plot.
