Altix is the one ray of sunshine in SGI's entire portfolio of products. Don't even try blaming IPF for their downfall.

Don't even try? What if I do? What else can be the cause of their dire condition?

SGI bet their company on Itanium, believing Intel promises, and what SGI got were endless delays, bugs, completely useless CPU, CPU that nobody wanted. Do you think it was a wise bet?

Intel may finally have a working Itanium CPU, but SGI may not be there to take advantage of it.

I think Intel will rescue them though. Whether it is in money under the table (free Itanium CPUs) or a direct cash transfer as a loan or whatever, Intel just can't afford the company of this high profile go under because of their bet on Itanium.
