As far as missle defense goes, one could say just the opposite. If the Pentagon had such a system set up, the damage might have been averted.

There is no missle defense system that could have averted this. It happened too fast - and was a commercial flight. No one saw this coming - I don't know who could have seen this coming. There was no defense system that could have prevented this.
