European defense spending boom: Key investment opportunities amid global shifts

This includes substantial investments across key defense technologies and a dedicated €150 billion credit facility to enhance military capabilities. “There’s going to be a lot of spending to come,” Edmondson noted, emphasizing major growth areas such as artificial intelligence, cyber defense, drone technology, and advanced artillery systems. She pointed out that leading European defense firms—including Rheinmetall, BAE Systems, Thales, Dassault, and Leonardo SPA—stand to benefit significantly from this expansion. Additionally, South Korea’s Hanwha Aerospace is emerging as a key player in global defense contracts. In contrast, U.S. defense companies are experiencing headwinds due to budget cuts and canceled procurement deals, leading to a relative downturn in the sector. Another critical shift in global defense procurement is unfolding as traditional U.S. allies reconsider their defense purchases. Canada and Portugal, for instance, are re-evaluating orders for U.S.-made F-35 fighter jets in favor of alternative options, such as aircraft from Dassault Aviation. Edmondson stressed that these geopolitical realignments are creating strong economic tailwinds, particularly for Germany, which is set to invest an estimated €500 billion in defense over the next several years. OKYO Pharma achieves key stability milestone for Urcosimod in clinical development

OKYO Pharma CEO Gary Jacob joined Steve Darling from Proactive to share a significant advancement in the company’s ongoing drug development efforts. The company has successfully demonstrated that urcosimod—formerly known as OK-101—remains stable for more than two and a half years in single-use ampoules, which are used for patient administration. This milestone is a crucial step forward in ensuring the long-term viability of the drug as it progresses through clinical trials. Urcosimod is currently being evaluated in a Phase 2b clinical trial, which is a randomized, placebo-controlled, double-masked study involving 48 patients. The trial is focused on assessing the drug’s effectiveness in treating neurotrophic keratopathy (NCP), a serious and progressive degenerative eye disease. Jacob emphasized that achieving success in clinical development extends beyond obtaining positive clinical trial data. A crucial aspect of regulatory approval includes meeting the rigorous Chemistry, Manufacturing, and Controls (CMC) requirements set by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). By demonstrating long-term stability, OKYO Pharma has strengthened its regulatory submission package, addressing an essential factor in the drug’s future approval and commercialization. The company recently completed Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) stability assay testing of single-use ampoules containing urcosimod in an ophthalmic solution. The results were highly promising—ampoules stored under refrigerated conditions maintained stability for over two and a half years, while initial three-month data from samples stored at room temperature showed potency levels at or above 100%. These findings reinforce confidence in urcosimod’s shelf life and its potential for real-world clinical use. Buru Energy secures strategic deal for LNG development

Buru Energy Ltd CEO Thomas Nador talked with Proactive about the company’s newly announced strategic development agreement with Clean Energy Fuels Australia Pty Ltd (CEFA) to co-develop the Rafael Gas Project. Nador explained that CEFA brings strong midstream and downstream capabilities, backed by I Squared Capital, which manages around $40 billion in assets. "They bring the right credentials, to look after the downstream and midstream elements of the project," he said. Buru, meanwhile, will focus on the upstream side of the Rafael development. The deal is described as a “watershed moment” for the company, as it provides a clear pathway toward developing a long-term gas and condensate business in northwest Western Australia—an area currently dependent on imported energy. Under the agreement, CEFA will fund, build, and operate a small-scale LNG facility on-site, with Buru paying a processing fee over the life of the project. This significantly reduces Buru’s capital exposure to only the upstream infrastructure—namely, two wells, one of which is already in place. A final investment decision is expected in late 2025 or early 2026, with first cash flows anticipated in the second half of 2027. According to Nador, the projected annual free cash flow from the Rafael development is expected to surpass the company’s current market capitalization. Directa Plus CEO on Q1 revenue jump on new contracts in Romania and textile market recovery

Directa Plus CEO Giulio Cesareo talked with Proactive's Stephen Gunnion about the company’s strong start to 2025 and the strategic impact of its environmental operations. Cesareo shared that the company saw a 40% rise in first-quarter revenue to approximately €2 million, driven by new contracts in Romania and a recovering textile market in Italy. “We have a significant contract with Midia International,” Cesareo explained, adding that work on oil recovery from drilling platforms resumed after a slowdown in 2024 due to the war in the Black Sea. The full acquisition of Setcar, a Romanian environmental service company, plays a central role in the company’s strategy. Cesareo highlighted that Setcar not only holds a full suite of environmental certifications but also occupies a “geopolitical significant position” as a potential gateway to Ukraine’s reconstruction. Environmental applications remain a key focus for Directa Plus, especially the use of its graphene materials to decontaminate water and soil. In collaboration with OMV Petrom, the company successfully decontaminated 44,000 cubic meters of water, recovering 10,000 barrels of crude oil. Research and development are also advancing. Directa Plus is working with Nant G Power on battery materials and refocusing on opportunities in sectors like tyres and PFAS filtration.
