Nahhh, you're way too low. Think about the seconds and milliseconds between being safe and out. What is it? 3" closer to start and 3" inches closer to 2nd base?
Not to mention, 3" more base to grab onto.
And of course there's the average speed of a pitch from a minor leaguer and throw from the catcher. Shrink the hypotenuse isn't as great as shrinking the sides of the triangle.
