gfp: It's all about the interest rates I guess. Part of the importance of rates is that unless rates drop the US is set to pay out $1.2 Trillion in interest on our debt in the next fiscal year. And that is at current rates. If rates were to rise it would cripple the national budget just to pay interest. We are a country that has maxxed out it's credit cards and needs to borrow the money just to meet the minimum payments.
