They have to put the spin on why he backs out, though.

One thing he IS good at is lying. He'll come up with something. Unless he's so far gone he doesn't realize he has less than half a functioning brain left.

I really can't think of any plausible excuse. If he says he's sick, that will just emphasize his age. And since he isn't in office, there isn't really an "emergency" he could plead. He really should have withdrawn a while back. Only 11 days to go.
