The environmental aspect for this kind of mining is also a serious issue. A few days ago, I found a study of that particular mine (Talawaan) where water in streams and rivers was sampled in the area, all very heavily contaminated with mercury, I'll have to find a link to it.
The mining methods and gold recovery are very crude, definitely in the artisanal category. I assume their tailings go into an unlined, unmonitored pond, or the nearest river:
