No university should accept a kid who can't read but can score touchdowns on Saturday. They have destroyed the whole idea of higher education..
And naturally I have another story. One day, the chairman of the BC art history department asked me to help her out. She'd given a student on the football team a D. And he'd gone to the dean to complain. She talked to the dean, who suggested having the kid retake his exam. And so she did, and the result was no better. In fact, his answers for the second test--which I take it was the same exam--were pretty much the same as those he first gave.
So I talked to him. He was a nice black kid. He was completely bewildered. He thought taking the exam for a second time was all he needed to do. It has apparently not occurred to him that he was supposed to get the answers right. Or at least to get more of the answers right. I tried to explain that to him.
That happened at the end of a semester, and I never learned what the outcome was. But I felt sorry for the kid. He was being exploited. Obviously he took other courses, and I doubt he did any better in them. But he was just getting passed through. Not getting any kind of education.
I'm pretty sure he didn't make the pros either. So what did he end up doing? Unlike Bruce, he wasn't white and middle class.
