There are several key reasons why cardiovascular events are high in Greece:
High prevalence of major cardiovascular risk factors in the Greek population:
Hypertension (high blood pressure): 39.2% overall, 42.4% in men, 36.1% in women
Hypercholesterolemia (high cholesterol): 60.2% overall, similar in men and women
Diabetes: 11.6% overall, similar in men and women
Obesity: 32.1% overall, 33.5% in women, 30.2% in men
Smoking: 38.2% overall, 44.0% in men, 32.7% in women

Unhealthy dietary habits moving away from the traditional Mediterranean diet, especially during the Greek financial crisis period. There was a significant decrease in fruit and vegetable consumption, particularly among lower socioeconomic groups.

Potential barriers to accessing healthcare and medications during the financial crisis, as well as increasing prevalence of depression.
While smoking prevalence decreased slightly during the crisis, it remained high overall. Physical activity levels increased, which is a positive trend.

In summary, the high burden of major modifiable risk factors like hypertension, high cholesterol, diabetes, obesity, smoking, and poor diet contribute substantially to the high incidence of cardiovascular events observed in the Greek population. The financial crisis appears to have exacerbated some of these risk factors. Urgent preventive actions at the healthcare and societal levels are recommended to address this alarming situation.
