Historically, 3M has been the leader in providing its industrial companies goods which allowed for great productivity for the customer. On the other side they were always allowed to charge a hefty premium for their products. They built their products by science.

Today, it seems like they have greatly cut back on research because I can't remember the last new product they released. Over the years Saint-Gobain and Henkle have seemed to catch up with the productivity products and charge substantially less. No reason to pay 3M's high price in many fields.
