I expect Murkowski to leave the GOP and become an Independent any day now.

The Senate voted along party lines Wednesday to effectively dismiss the first of two impeachment articles against Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas by deeming it unconstitutional and failing to rise to the level of high crimes and misdemeanors.

Mr. Mayorkas is accused of willfully subverting immigration-enforcement laws and breaching the public trust by lying to Congress and the public about the border and efforts to control it.

All 51 senators who caucus with Democrats voted in favor of the motion put forward by Senate Majority Leader Charles E. Schumer, New York Democrat.

Nearly all Republicans — 48 — opposed.

GOP Sen. Lisa Murkowski of Alaska voted present.
