I really don't think that would work. Even a couple of months out from a trial, the judge may not allow his attorney or attorneys to withdraw. I recently read about a case in which the attorney for the defense wanted to quit the case five or six months before trial, claiming he hadn't been paid.

The judge refused to allow it.
