The Taiwanese chip group TSMC, the main supplier of Nvidia's AI chips, will build a third factory in the US state of Arizona. That brings the total investment to $65 billion.

Lael Brainard, President Joe Biden's chief economic adviser, spoke of a "new chapter in the history of the semiconductor industry in the United States." Speaking to the press, she explained that the investment planned by TSMC is based on a preliminary agreement with the Ministry of Commerce, which is linked to a key law for technology investments, the 'Chips and Science Act'.

Under that agreement, the company will receive up to $6.6 billion in direct financing and an additional $5 billion in the form of loans. With this law, Biden wants to protect America against future shortages of these essential chips, which are used in mobile phones, electric cars and advanced military equipment. Currently, the US is highly dependent on Asia for components and therefore vulnerable in the event of a geopolitical crisis, especially in a region such as Taiwan. China considers the island as one of its provinces. TSMC already planned to build two factories in Arizona. Due to the plans for a third, the chipmaker increases the total investment from 40 to 65 billion dollars.
