Dante was obviously dealing with his own hell on earth after being banished from Florence. And he spent years equating what happened to him and what was going on in Florence at the time and looking for some sort of redemption. I think he hoped one day to return to a Florence which was much more to his liking. After the Inferno he goes on in his writing to paint a better picture as he ascends from a hell of his own creation going through stages until he finally reconciles all the things he dealt with in his lifetime and reaches his idea of heaven where again he meets his childhood sweetheart and finds inner peace.

Not sure an ore pit would work. Have you watched the second half yet?
