The world's central banks still own a huge amount of gold, so they obviously see it as having value.

Well, we don't know this to be true. Many believe all that Ft Know is protecting is the truth that nothing is inside.
Nixon took us off the gold system long ago. I've said for many years that collecting gold is....well .....Fool's gold. Other than at a Pawn Shop (of course they take their commission right off the top).
And trading gold is far worse, ever check into these companies that sell gold? They control the market and the markups.
Diamonds used to be the top notch gem to have, but now they can make artificial ones.
Water.....the only true commodity I can think of without a replacement.....unless of course you accept the words of that great Politician President Dwayne Elizondo Mountain Dew Camacho, who claims Brawndo is better for you than water.
