Shorts can hold on for decades if they want to. I always point out that they will have a hard time covering over a short period of time. Sorry if you mis understood the situation and thought that they they had to cover. As long as they want to pay interest to whoever they borrowed the shares from, and as long as whomever they borrowed them from, doesn't call them back, as long as there isn't a buyout, or dividends paid, they can remain there holding the shares they borrowed and sold paying the interest. They don't make money until they return them. It is hard for most to understand. If you've ever bought 100k of shares in a day here you would "get it"
