A couple weeks ago I was on vacation in the canary islands.
3 days after I arrived, I was a little disturbed. I was supposed to bring back cigars and cigarillos for my brother in law. But I know absolutely nothing about that. We had stopped at a shop and there were real big cigars, senioritas, minitos and petitos. And a whole selection of different kinds of each.
That night, we are having a cocktail outside on a terrace where they had spread around several couches for smokers. They was this guy sitting a few feet away smoking a cigarillo. So I asked him if he spoke english, yes, where'd he buy them. He says Germany, he had just arrived that day.
The guy was alone at the hotel, said his son paid for the trip (could be to get rid of him for a while, I dunno)
Anyway, I became his best friend and his english improved remarkably after our first conversation.
Turns out he (so he said) was in the paramilitary in Bosnia with UN peace keeping troops, never fired his weapon, wasn't allowed to unless fired upon.
Then he was with NATO strategic command during the Kuwait-Iraq thing, planning troop placements and movements.
Said he was in a Kuwaiti hospital and saw piles of woman and children that had been mindlessly slaughtered by the Iraqis.
Now he adopts handicapped orphans from the red cross when they end up in Germany. He's got a blind daughter that is a musical prodigy and a handicapped boy that loves soccer and memorizes all the statistics.
He was hoping to find a Manchester United jersey ripoff for his son, but couldn't find any.
I think that after the first encounter he spent most of his free time roaming around the smoking areas of the hotel to see if he could find me to recount his life.....
