Lewrock, in my previous jewelry manufacturing career of 24 years, and 24 years ago...our metals refinery was trying to develop a new sterling silver casting alloy that was tarnish resistant. They sent us sterling silver casting grain at no charge, to cast jewelry parts and process the goods into finished jewelry. We analyzed the results and sent some of the product back to the refinery to analyze on their own. The end result was a new sterling silver casting alloy that they could market to the masses globally. There was benefit to BOTH companies. The refinery farmed out R&D to an alloy consumer, providing the metals. The Jewelry Foundry/Manufacturer benefitted by getting free material during the R&D process, which we sold to our customers. It was a WIN/WIN scenario for all of the parties involved.
