To clarify, we are talking here about one single IC (singular) that implements the DSP functionality a driver functionality for 8 lanes (plural). It is a single chip though, not 1 DSP + 8 discrete driver chips, that is the point. This is the way in the semiconductor industry, integrate as much as possible onto a single silicon die, because that is the easiest way to reduce cost and power while increasing density. The same holds true on the photonic side by the way, which is why we're going from discrete optics to photonic integrated circuits.
