That is also total myth pushed by pumpers who try to sell crap to retail.

First, all shares are accounted for. There are a few that have been sold and not delivered, but I guarantee you the broker/DTC knows the shares were not delivered and who owes them. The vast majority of short shares have been loaned out. And are well tracked., Just like banks take cash other have on deposit and loan it out.

And on a stock distribution, market change or any such nothing changes. If somebody is short 100 shares before a 5% stick dividend, they become short 105 shares after, No pain as the PPS is expected to drop the same 5% on a distribution.
