goodie.........it is a polite way of saying no.... by saying it softly they do not arouse latent anger that the public has about the loss of billions in dollars, divorces, suicides, family breakups, and so on...just like a doctor tempers his diagnosis with a little hope, even though he knows your affliction is severe...my father was hopeful that he would recover from a bowel cancer growth on his anus, until the doctor gave him the instruction to put his affairs in order (signifying death was coming soon)...at this, my father shriveled up, gave up hope, an died...the S.O.B. doctor was chastised for such a truthful diagnosis as not even giving a dying man hope for living.... sometimes the truth will hurt badly, and those giving it would probably rather hedge on the side of hope .... we all do it when we encounter a sick person who we know is in bad health... we give him hope, all the while we know the outcome will be fatal....its over, goodie.. go on with your life....
