I believe if my memory serves me right, the explanation of that volume at the time was settlement of dark pool trading that took place throughout the day. There were a number of days with multi million dollar volume day and they were always attributed to the dark pool activities. None of this was verified by anything other than speculation it simply was explained as settlement of trades counting in the millions that had virtually no effect on share prices for the day.
