There's an interesting article in the Jan/Feb 24' issue of Semiconductor Digest titled:

IEDM Grapples with CMOS 2.0 Challenges 4 days ago

Sixty years after CMOS (Complementary Metal-Oxide-Semiconductor) began to transform the semiconductor industry, CMOS 2.0 is taking shape, now as then, with lower power consumption as a driving force. At the recent International Electron Devices Meeting (IEDM 2023), participants heard of a rich pipeline of technologies, including new transistor architectures, backside processing, heterogenous integration of chiplets, optical interconnects, and many other advances.

Take away: The need for higher performance at lower power. imec, Applied Materials, Qualcomm mentions.
