Trump Drops Out Of Phoenix 'FreedomFest' Event After AZ GOP Chair Bribery Scandal

Donald Trump will no longer be a headlining speaker at the Arizona FreedomFest event Friday in Phoenix. The last minute lineup change comes a day after Arizona GOP chair Jeff DeWit resigned after a taped recording of a conversation between DeWit and Arizona Senate candidate Kari Lake last March was released this week revealing that he attempted to bribe Lake to drop out of the race.

In the tape, DeWit suggests that "very powerful people" were willing to give Kari Lake a job in exchange for staying out of the 2024 Senate race.

In his resignation letter, DeWit claimed that the offer was "taken out of context." He notes that Kari Lake was actually his employee at the time and he was "looking out for her financial interests." He says that her act of recording the conversation "raises serious legal and moral concerns."

Both DeWit and Lake are MAGA Trump supporters. DeWit is a large dollar Trump donor. Kari Lake was until recently on the short list to be Trump's running mate, but that job appears to likely be going to New York Congresswoman Elise Stefanik.

Trump dropping out is a huge let down for attendees who paid to hear Trump speak and for the event organizers. As of the time of this writing, the Trump campaign has not given a reason for him not attending the event.
