Need to maintain refrigeration/freeze and also wouldn’t want to interrupt production and the valuable life extending potential of vaccines in the process of being made when commercial power might be interrupted.

I used to do design and backup/contingency planning, and typically the large backup batteries that are under charge also act as large capacitors, and with power filtering, produce much cleaner power than straight commercial power. This is important for processors in computers and process control.

For our large communication equipment type applications we would have the commercial power source and backup power source switchable to the backup batteries and inverters, so if commercial power goes out the backup generators are engaged and switched over to the battery/inverter subsystems, providing clean transition.

At least that’s what we did in the “good old days.”
