This is from the UW Daily paper which I subscribe to. If you know any college kids- encourage them to get our and vote!

The college-aged vote: how it’s changed and why it’s important

Recent election years have seen a spike in voter turnout for the 18-29 age demographic, with 50% of this cohort voting in the 2020 presidential election. The college-aged vote significantly impacted the results of the presidential race, and this trend is predicted to continue in 2024.

This has also been present within the UW voting demographic, which has one of the highest rates of voter engagement among universities nationwide. According to the National Study of Learning, Voting and Engagement, UW’s voting rate for eligible students was 76.7% compared to the average rate of 66% across all higher education institutions in 2020. This climb in voter participation at UW was an 8.6% increase from 2016. UW has a handful of programs devoted to increasing student voting, including the informational resource Huskies Vote and leadership coalition Democracy Dawgs.

Although the youth vote has increased, it only makes up 10% of overall ballots cast. This means that a single young voter’s ballot holds proportionally more weight than that of an older voter within their respective age groups. Thus, by voting, college students each make a greater impact on voter demographics.

“If that large pool of voters does actually turn out to vote, then they end up representing a significant part of the electorate,” professor and director of the Center for American Politics John Wilkerson said. “That really can make a difference.”
