The SEC contacted me once, somewhere around 2005, wanted to know why I had bought Giga Bubala Technologies (I'm making up the name here, literary license), 3 years prior. My first reaction was to say "who the fuck knows, I'm not sure why I bought shit yesterday", however I stayed civil and told the guy that the stock wasn't ringing any bells. What's the ticker? He gave it to me and I told him I'd do some research and call back.
I did my research, took a couple hours, turns out I bought the thing before a FS name change, sold it after, and made off with about $300 in profit.
THIS IS YOUR TAX DOLLARS AT WORK.
Well, I said I'd call back, so I did, and made the guy feel like an idiot for calling me in the first place.
$300 bucks, biggest crime of the century, and he wanted to be the one to bring me to justice. Obviously the real flaw in his plan is that I live in France and the SEC has no jurisdiction here.
