There is a good possibility that it does detect plastic weapons because it uses the earths magnetic field to detect things on a person. I believe there technology doesn't show things on a television screen it just alerts security of a potential threat on that person and the location on the body . They have a silhouette of a body and I believe a light flashes on the part of the body where there was a weapon detected so security can frisk that person.
