I’m not sure if the decision to settle at such a low amount was more because of the result of discovery or because of recent events and untimely passing of the CEO. If no one at the company wanted to keep pursuing this then they settle for any amount to make it end.

It’s an unfortunate symptom of the justice system. If a defendant has enough money and power they can afford to drag a case out for years. In this case they literally dragged it out until the plaintiff died.
