Comics, and popular culture in general, have been a growing area of academic study for what they reveal about our society. Researchers have used the Library’s comics collection to explore such topics as the changing roles of women and evolving perspectives on race and ethnicity.

Wimmen’s Comix [1974] also addressed LGBTQ issues early on: The debut issue featured “Sandy Comes Out,” the first strip starring an “out” lesbian. As those issues became more prominent in society, they increasingly were reflected in storylines and characters in mainstream comics — especially in recent years.

Expecting that trend to continue...(but evolve & the success of Nick Barrucci's 'The Boys' is a great example) Because comic books are a visual medium (& largely due to their iconic format) the STORYBOARDING for films is often already done (combination of written words & visual "scenes" if you will)... And probably WHY Nick Barrucci appears to be doubling down on the TRANSITION of comics-to-film AS did Stan Lee; & why I wrote that I think Nick might step into those shoes -- as he seems very intently HEADING in that direction! Moreover, comic books have that EDGE that Hip-Hop & other (someone might say) fringe-art bring to the masses... For those unfamiliar check out Nick Barrucci's 'The Boys'... Mike The Pike Productions has announced that its subsidiary company Arowana Media Holdings has acquired the worldwide film and television rights to the "Vampirella Universe" from Dynamite Entertainment. Arowana Media Holdings, is a media holdings company that states it has "a focus on transcendent storytelling across film, television, digital media, and other entertainment mediums", and their acquisition includes "stories, characters, and derivative works of the Vampirella universe."

Vampirella will be produced by Mark Newbauer of Mike The Pike, Nick Barrucci and Juan Collado of Dynamite Entertainment.
