I have several thoughts on what he might be doing. But I am fairly certain he has been holding the price down to continue adding. I also think he might be generating profit on his short positions, to effectively lower his cost basis (realistically, it's just adding return to his portfolios).

There is also the possibility that he is keeping the press depressed to make a lower buyout price more acceptable to shareholders.

He literally stated in the proxy material that they may initiate short positions in the stock. I have no reason to believe that he would not follow through on that.

Regarding insider trading, by definition, he has insider knowledge because HIS EMPLOYEES are on the board. If I am not mistaken, he can have insider knowledge, and purchase shares, but cannot profit from that insider knowledge for a sale within 6 months (short-swing profit rule).
