why would ENTA drop a super early stage program in which no one is expecting to hear much for a long time from their slide deck?

It makes sense (IMO) to pause the PLPro program pending regulatory clarity on EDP-235. It should be a simple matter to resume discovery work on PLPro if ENTA opts to do so.
