Just an observation; when I visited the Netherlands Antilles islands in the Caribbean (Aruba, Curaçao) last December I noticed a distinct difference in how clean and organized these islands appeared. There were no homeless. The streets and businesses were immaculate. There was no poverty or what we would consider slums. When we visited St Lucia (US protectorate), it was totally opposite. As our tour bus drove through town you would see broken down vehicles, dilapidated buildings. One particular area it reminded me of areas of Rio de Janeiro, where you had the rich areas right next to slums with tin roofs. Oprah Winfrey has a residence in St Lucia, not far away is a small fishing village with many children barefoot. They live in shanties. As our bus drove through “shantytown” the street was barely wide enough for the bus, as there were shanty’s lined up on both sides. I often wondered why the tour buses even took this route? I guess because they wanted the tourists to see the “full extent” Historical area they said? It wasn’t a pretty sight. I never want to go back there again. But I wonder why the conditions were so different from the Dutch Antilles from the US Antilles? I think it’s all about the “give a crap attitude.” Obviously Americans don’t have it, Europeans do. Anything goes with no accountability.
