A lie is the conscious misrepresentation of one or more facts in order to gain a benefit or harm another person, where the actor knows or should know that the misrepresentation will be relied upon by another person. If there is no conscious intent to deceive, there is no lie. Failure to achieve success in the time or manner originally intended -- despite one's best efforts and/or intentions -- does not constitute lying.
