scorman1, those shares were not "FREE". The options are part of his compensation package. He earned them. The strike was $1.60 per share - meaning that when those options were granted the share price was $1.60. The share price now is ~$8.50. Excellent return.

Dr. Missling chose to convert that compensation into shares at the higher strike: in other words, instead of taking $2.2m home, he chose to buy and keep 230,000 AVXL shares.
